Vintage Dessert Plate, Sarreguemines, La Fontaine's Fables (The Wolf and the Lamb)
This is a vintage plate from the Sarreguemines factory, from their Fables of La Fontaine series.
"The Wolf and the Lamb" (Le loup et l'agneau)
This plate depicts a wolf upstream and a lamb downstream in a river.
In the original story, the wolf falsely accuses the lamb of muddying the water, and due to this unfairness, the lamb is eaten by the wolf.
This fable illustrates how the powerful unjustly blame the weak.
However, the lamb on this plate is confronting the wolf with a metal club hidden behind its back.
Perhaps this lamb intends to give the wolf a taste of its own medicine.
Unlike the tragic ending of the original fable, the lamb's hidden rebellious spirit brings a chuckle.
