Vintage Dessert Plate, Sarreguemines, La Fontaine's Fables (The Fox and the Stork)
This is a vintage plate from the Sarreguemines factory, from their Fables de La Fontaine series.
"The Fox and the Stork" (Le Renard et la Cigogne)
On this plate, a fox and a stork are eating a meal.
In the original fable, the cunning fox invites the stork to soup served on a plate, and the long-beaked stork is unable to eat, much to its distress.
Later, in revenge, the stork invites the fox to a feast served in a narrow-necked jar.
On this plate, the stork has prepared a drink in a narrow-necked bottle, and the fox has prepared one in a difficult-to-drink flask.
However, a witty touch of humor has been added: the fox is attempting to drink using a straw.
The moral of the fable, "what goes around comes around," is a common theme, but the quick-witted fox is quite charming.
