Antique Plate Onand Eglantines E (On display at Osaka store)
This is an antique plate from the Onnaing Pottery, Eglantines series.
"Eglantines" refers to wild roses.
The dynamically drawn bouquet and the delicate ornamentation on the rim beautifully adorn the plate.
The Onnaing Pottery was located in the town of Onnaing, in northern France, near Belgium. It was particularly famous for its barbotine ware and existed from 1821 to 1938.
This particular series does not have the usual backstamp. Furthermore, instead of "Terre de fer" (earthenware), it bears the mark "Ivoire" (ivory), which leads us to believe it was a special edition. ("Ivoire" means ivory, suggesting that a cream-colored clay was used.)
The cream-colored plate, with its added discoloration and crazing, creates a wonderful antique atmosphere.
Condition: The crazing is spread throughout and discoloration is visible, but there are no chips or cracks, making it in good condition.
Size: Approximately 22.5cm diameter x 3cm
Period: Believed to be late 19th century.
