Vintage Plate Digoin & Sarreguemines Messidor C
This is a vintage plate from the Messidor series by the Digoin & Sarreguemines pottery.
Messidor refers to the "month of harvest" in the French Republican Calendar, the season of abundance (mid-June to mid-July in the Gregorian calendar).
Fresh early summer flowers and plants are vibrantly depicted on the lustrous white ceramic surface, as if breathing.
Warm golden wheat ears, large flowers with vivid pink hues, and deep, clear blue cornflowers (bleuet).
This luxurious piece combines the soft texture of stenciling with the exceptional hand-painting of artisans.
The exquisite brushstrokes, color gradations, andかすれ (fading effects) of the paint reveal the artisan's touch in each plate, making no two pieces exactly alike.
The flowers and plants gracefully extending along the rim are like an unfading, beautiful "floral wreath."
The balance between the boldly-taken blank space on the right half and the single blue line that tightens the overall composition is very modern, instantly brightening any table setting.
With its artistic quality reminiscent of a painting, it possesses an overwhelming presence, making you want to display it in a cabinet.
