Ciergerie des Prémontrés
CIERGERIE DES PRÉMONTRÉS
Founded in 1858, Ciergerie des Prémontrés is the only remaining candle manufacturer in the Provence region.
The company carries on the candle-making techniques and expertise of Prémontrés Abbey, manufacturing its candles today using the same methods as in the past. Relying little on machines, these meticulously handcrafted candles are the epitome of beauty.
From various perspectives, including its traditional manufacturing methods and environmentally friendly ingredients, the company has been awarded the French EPV (Living Heritage Company) label.
〜Three candle-making methods〜
Long, thick candles
A La Louche (Ladle method)
This technique is also known as candle haute couture.
A technique dating back to the Middle Ages, the process, from beginning to end, is entirely done by hand by artisans. This results in extremely high quality, allowing for the creation of large, thick candles (up to 140 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter).
The candle wick is attached to a metal ring, and the artisan ladles hundreds of scoops of hot, molten wax onto the wick, gradually thickening it. As more wax is added, the candle develops layers, much like the annual rings of a tree.

Objects
Moulage (Molding method)
Molding wax sculptures requires traditional techniques and experience.
The elastomer molds are crafted with uncompromising attention to the smallest details. After demolding, every aspect, from the model's expression to the fluidity of the clothing, is meticulously checked and refined without compromise.
The company continues to produce these objects based on the principle that the passion and knowledge of its artisans are assets that guarantee customer satisfaction.

Thin candles
A la plonge (Dipping method)
This dipping method originated in the 15th century.
It allows for the creation of conical candles that gradually narrow towards the top. Carefully selected long, sturdy cotton wicks are tied to hang from a wooden rod shaped like a hoop. They are then thoroughly immersed in wax under the strict supervision of the artisan.
The wicks, thoroughly impregnated with wax, are then dipped into a generous amount of molten wax. This process of dipping, drying, and redipping is repeated. The finished candle reveals layers, like annual rings, that attest to its meticulous craftsmanship.
These carefully handcrafted candles produce a flame of incomparable brilliance, increased luminosity, and can burn for nearly twice as long as conventional candles.
The candles and wax objects from Ciergerie des Prémontrés, rich in history, tradition, and exceptional craftsmanship, are sure to beautifully illuminate your special days and memories with loved ones.
